cannon beach hotel

Cannon Beach Hotel

I just got back from my first overnight stay in Cannon Beach, Oregon. I live in the Portland metro area and had never visited Cannon Beach in the 8 years I have lived here. In the past I had gone to Newport, Seaside, Lincoln City and even Bandon, but never to Cannon Beach. The town is simply wonderful with a small "city center" and main street (Hemlock St.). We went during the slower time of year (November 2009) and had a great time. Fortunately for us the rain held up and we had a gorgeous sunny day at the beach - the temperature was cold but we could at least get outside and walk around. Cannon Beach is definitely a great place to stroll along the coast or do some shopping along Hemlock Street. As for hotels and inns, there are at least a dozen places to choose from depending on your budget and needs. For a romantic weekend, most travelers on websites like TripAdvisor tell you to try the Stephanie Inn. Be prepared for an expensive room rate ($400+) but the location and amenities are top notch. With a family, a better suited hotel would be something like the Hallmark Resort Cannon Beach or the Surfsand Resort.
Hotels in Cannon Beach can be had for less than $100/night at spots like Tolovana Inn but during the peak summer months expect rates to go higher than $200 at most places. The #1 rated hotel per TripAdvisor users, is The Ocean Lodge. It's located south of the city center and next to the Stephanie Inn which is the most luxurious hotel in Cannon Beach. The ocean view rooms at the Ocean Lodge are worth the price as you can see Haystack Rock just up the shore. I prefer staying closer to town so that you can walk to pretty much anything you need. For those of you that want to rent a house in Cannon Beach, there are lots of vacation rentals available with 2, 3 or 4+ bedrooms to choose from. VRBO.com or Visitcb.com are two excellent websites to get you started on that vacation rental house in Cannon Beach.
The weather on the Oregon coast can be very rainy during the winter and even the summer months aren't exactly warm. Most days the temperature doesn't get above 65 degrees, so be ready for cooler weather. The views from many of the coastal hotels are awesome - many places boast of Haystack Rock views. On our recent stay we had an oceanfront room and with clear weather it was worth the premium over non-view rooms. Many of the hotels are pet friendly so you can bring along the dog or cat. Just up the coast from Cannon Beach is Ecola State Park with incredible views overlooking the Pacific Ocean - a short hike takes you to a good lookout point. What I like about Cannon Beach is that it's roughly 90 miles from the city of Portland so you can get there in less than 2 hours time. Hwy 26 is an easy drive and then you get on 101 South.
